If we have a family slogan, it’s this. Our eight years of marriage have been filled with so much stress from outside forces we can’t control. Health challenges. Recalcitrant extended family. Narcissistic ex-spouses. Confused and angry and hurting children. Work stress and church drama and a world that thinks it’s okay to bash white, middle-class, Christian, Constitution- supporting second amendment exercisers at every turn but try to quietly live out our beliefs, and we’re demonized as hateful bigots. It is what it is is a reminder that circumstances are out of our control. That we can’t say or do anything to change them, and expending to much emotional energy on it is fruitless. We just have to take a deep breath, say a quiet prayer for patience, and move forward. Reorganization at work? It is what it is. Someone insists on believing something that isn’t true, and nothing we say can change their mind? It is what it is. I get a migraine fifteen minutes before a big event? It is what it is. Jim needs two surgeries in a single summer? It is what it is. All we can do is figure out a way to deal with it, together.
