Several weeks ago, my parents asked me to write an original poem as Santa’s prayer to God about Christmas. As strong Christians, active volunteers in their church and hosts for one of the largest community groups in their area, it’s important to my Mom & Dad to help families keep the focus on the true reason for Christmas celebrations. They love seeing children light up with joy when they spot Santa and Mrs. Claus, and they treasure the time spent interacting with them, asking what presents they hope to see under the tree on Christmas Day. But they want to help parents link those gifts to God’s gift to us – our salvation in the form of His son, Jesus Christ. When children understand that Santa gives gifts in honor of God’s gift to us all, it’s a launchpad to involving them in “secret giving” to friends, family, and those in need.
They’ve printed postcards with the “Santa Kneels Before the King” artwork I created for the book we published last year; this poem is on the reverse. If you see them at an event this season, be sure to ask Mrs. Claus for a postcard!

Father God, I pray, this season
as we decorate the tree,
that we would all remember
the true reason for our glee.
It’s not about the food or lights
or shopping deep in debt.
It’s so much more important than
all the stuff we hope to get.
We got our most important gift
two thousand years ago
when you sent your son to save us all,
cover our sins, as white as snow.
Your son Jesus is the reason
for our Christmas holiday.
So I give gifts to boys and girls in honor
of your gift to us that day.
Father God, I pray that I may show
your love through secret giving.
I need no praise or accolades,
just joyful, generous living.
I pray for all the boys and girls
in the whole of your creation,
that this Christmas they’d focus on Jesus’ birth
And give you their adulation.
